18 “He himself is swift on the water’s surface;
their portion is cursed in the land.
⌊No one turns toward the path of their vineyards⌋.
19 Drought and heat snatch away the snow waters,
like Sheol snatches away those who have sinned.
20 The womb forgets him.
The maggot feasts on him until he is no longer remembered,
and wickedness is broken like a tree.
He feeds on the barren, who does not have a child,
and does no good to the widow.
22 Yet he carries off the tyrants by his strength;
if he rises up, then he cannot be certain of life.
23 He gives security to him, and he is supported,
but his eyes are upon their ways.
24 They are exalted a little while, then ⌊they are gone⌋.
And they are brought low; they are cut off like all others,
and like the heads of grain they wither away.
25 “And if it is not so, then who can prove me a liar
and reduce my word to nothing?”
Hey everyone, Chapter 24:18-25 caught my attention. Because Job seems to wonder about the punishment of the wicked.
In this section, Job seems to contradict his previous statements by agreeing with his friends that the wicked do experience punishment. Because it seems contradictory, some translations turn this section into a quote of Job’s friends by adding “You say” at the beginning quote of Job’s friends by adding “You say” at the beginning (21:19; 22:13). However, this is not necessary: Job never explicitly says that God never judges the wicked. He merely points out that God’s judgment of them is not always present or timely (24:1). Job also argues that the wicked eventually die (21:23–26), and later states that they will be cut off without hope. Job wrestles with belief in God’s justice in face of the seemingly unjust suffering he has endured. This is not the first time Job expresses contradictory opinions (14:10–17). Despite lamenting his inability to find vindication (9:15–20), Job also expresses faith that he will be vindicated (19:25–27).
I hope me going back putting earlier verses from our daily readying help you guys understand these verses from chapter 24. May God bless the reading of his word. Grace and peace everyone.
